Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A small, round-headed tree (24-30') whose neat habit and attractive small, 3-lobed leaves have made it useful as a street tree. S/M
This interesting maple may actually be evergreen in some warmer climates such as zone 8+ but is otherwise deciduous like other maples. Montpellier Maple is native to the dry Mediterranean region and so is both heat and drought tolerant, although it also does well in cooler northern climates. It is an excellent choice for lawn shade trees or as a street tree, especially because the tiny and well rounded leaves are very attractive. Branching is dense and the small leaves are crowded together tightly so this is an excellent choice for large privacy hedges. The tight branching also lends this tree to bonsai use, where the Montpellier Maple can be easily shaped with a dense crown.
The Montpellier Maple can be difficult to find in the U.S. but is very common in Europe, we are hoping to encourage much wider use here locally.
An upright, stocky tree with small dark green leathery leaves that lend it heat and drought tolerance. Native in the south of France, and generally all around the Mediterranean area on limestone-based soils, it ought to be offered more frequently in the trade due to its extremely tough constitution. Excellent tree for a high pH, droughty site where it will predictably not only survive, but thrive.
Beautiful Maple from the Southern Meditteranean and Northern Africa that loves the sun and is more drought tolerant than most Maples. We have this in our display border and love the ivy-like leaves and pale salmon new growth. The fruits are a showy reddish color. Nice narrow habit.
