A vigorous annual to tender perennial, Roselle Hibiscus prefers a warm, mostly sunny position in a well-draining, humus rich, moderately fertile, sandy-loam and free from competition. All parts of the plant are edible including the roots. It will grow foliage and stems all spring and summer with flowering beginning in the shorter days beginning in late summer and fall. The pink tinged, cream colored, typical 5 petaled, 3" wide, citrus flavored Hibiscus flowers attract a variety of native pollinators and are held against the dark burgundy, glossy stems and deep green, burgundy tinged and veined, and typically 3, 5, or 7 lobed foliage. Under good conditions one to several flowers will be born at each leaf axil over a period which typically lasts for several weeks but is dependent on the arrival of the first killing frosts and freezes in your area. Roselle is considered a perennial in frost free climates.
Tasty hibiscus tea is a popular summertime drink that's brewed from the deep red sepals and calyces of Roselle Jamaican Hibiscus. Full of vitamin C and anthocyanins, the bright red beverage is a healthy, no sugar alternative to sweet tea or other sugary drinks. Easy to grow as an annual in northern zones, Roselle Jamaican Hibiscus can be planted directly in the ground or in a large container. Plants are 3-4' tall with a bushy growth habit. Flowers are borne in the leaf axils and typically last only one day after which a red calyx forms. The decorative, 1-2" calyx has 5 large, fleshy sepals. These are harvested to brew hibiscus tea as well as make jelly. If left on the plant, they become seedpods. Grow your own healthy hibiscus tea in your summer garden.
This tropical perennial is the source of the red sepals that are used in that delicious ‘Agua de Jamaica’ served all over Mexico. This is a thirst quenching, sweet tart ruby drink touted for health benefits (Mexicanos hail it as a digestive tonic). We have any easy recipe – ask us! 3-4’tall and 2-3’ wide; big white to rose flowers all summer with dark center. Full sun, most soils, water when dry.
