Low growing mounds of dark green, narrow leaves give rise to 12-16” vertical spikes of red, feathery flowers late spring, summer and fall with a little deadheading. Sun loving and drought tolerant, thrives in well-drained soil but will take heavier soils that are on the dry side; content in the rock garden and will live in a pot. Good nectar plant for pollinators; native to the Caucasus Mountains of Iran; deer resistant. May not be long lived, especially where winters are wet and cold but will politely self sow.
Native to the Caucasus mountains of northern Iran this hardier and more compact echium adds color and architecture to the garden with 16" red flower spikes over handsome fuzzy long narrow foliage. Flowers late spring through summer if early flowers are removed. Gritty well drained soil with little water in full sun are best. USDA zone 4.
Fine perennial that is perfect for that hot sunny spot. We saw this grown to perfection in Denver where it made nice clumps in various xeric gravel gardens and commanded attention with its spikes of russet red flowers like some compact Liatris. Hardy to zone 5 and will bloom all summer if deadheaded but we like to let some seed ripen.
This cultivar forms low-growing mounds of narrow dark green leathery foliage from which arise feathery flowering spikes covered in a multitude of russet-red florets. This long-blooming species will repeat bloom in summer and fall if properly deadheaded. Drought tolerant. Very popular with hummingbirds.
Basically a smaller version of E. russicum, rough, hairy leaves, and spikes of raspberry flowers to around a foot tall. Like E. russicum, inclined to be short lived. Zone 4
Russet-red flowers. Low dark green leaves.
A CLAY TOLERANT,?super easy, cute-as-a-button Echium for those of you in colder climates is finally here! Thriving on total neglect, this adorable little drought tolerant clumper only grows to 10-16" high & 6-8" wide. Perfect for tucking into to little nooks & crannies anywhere in the garden. Bees & butterflies adore the feathery, red, 16" flower spikes which first appear in Spring & with deadheading continue to bloom all the way through Fall. Word on the street is that it may be a short lived perennial, so leave a few flower spikes intact at the end of the season for some reseeding action. Tidy little tufts of lance shaped green basal leaves. A native to the Caucasus Mountains in a small section of northern Iran, we'd like to give a big shout out to the collaboration between Colorado State University and Denver Botanic Gardens for finding this gem.
This astonishing perennial recently introduced from the Caucasus consists of a basal tuft of dark green, linear leaves which produce spikes of feathery, russet-red flowers in spring, re-blooming again in summer and fall if deadheaded. This adaptable plant resembles a reddish, spring-blooming liatris with vibrant designer color. Clay, sandy soil or loam. USDA zones 3-9 (up to 9000').
