Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A longer season for its small very-fruit-fragrant flowers, a more compact habit (4-8'), and more vigorous, hardier growth recommend this variety of the much loved Banana Shrub for container/patio/hedge. S-PSh/M
The most vigorous growing of the Banana Magnolias or Banana Shrubs, Skinner's Banana Magnolia produces 1" long, sweetly banana scented, creamy yellow, cupped, miniature Magnolia flowers in spring and may produce some flowers until fall once mature. Still somewhat uncommon in the nursery trade, this small but vigorous evergreen tree or large shrub has a naturally upright to pyramidal habit with dark green glossy foliage. Skinner's Banana Magnolia makes a wonderful specimen, hedge, screen, or can easily be trained into a tree form. Skinner's Banana Magnolia has a fast rate of growth when young and when grown under average or better conditions. Growth generally slows as they get larger and closer to their mature size of about 15-20' high. Even young Skinner's Banana Magnolia plants generally flower well even under average conditions and they can be grown as container plants for many years with proper care. Where not cold hardy overwinter indoors under high light and preferably with direct sunlight.
Handsome evergreen tree, once in the genus Michelia and now classified with Magnolias. To 15-30', with fragrant, creamy flowers in early summer. Thrives in sun to part shade with consistent moisture. Has proved to be one of the hardiest to cold of the michelia grouping within the Magnolias, accepting USDA zone 7.
