Asparagus retrofractus plant details

Asparagus retrofractus is a broadleaf evergreen perennial with green foliage. In spring white flowers emerge followed by orange fruit. Grows well with sun - dappled shade and regular - low water. Drought tolerant once established. Prefers to be dry in summer. Does well in acidic, average, gritty, rich, rocky and well-drained soil. A good option if you're seeking something heat tolerant, humidity tolerant and verticillium wilt resistant.

A clumping, woody perennial to 5-6' tall, with soft, wispy foliage on open stems. Increases in height and vigor as it becomes more established. Flowers are small and white in open sprays that carry the aroma of coconut. Very decorative orange berries follow. Full sun to shade with little summer water once established in the ground. Frost hardy to only 20 °F, USDA zone 9, so best in a container in PDX, with water and protection when temperatures drop below.
