This garrya is said to have even longer catkins than G.'James Roof'. The foliage is deep green and wavy. When windy, the leaves make a nice rustling sound.
Purple-tinted catkins up to 1'(!) long decorate this elegant large (10+') native very early in spring; its handsome leathery leaves, placed more densely than on ?James Roof?, make it perfect for screening. S/M-D/GDr
This winter blooming native to Southern Oregon and coastal California is an evergreen shrub with an upright habit, 8-10’ tall and half as wide, more compact than the species with longer, dramatic, 8-10” long, cream tassels in profusion Jan – Feb; foliage is dark green and tough. Deer ignore it, drought doesn’t faze it. You can almost plant it and forget it – but don’t forget to ADMIRE it, especially when it is blooming!
This evergreen shrub is a cultivar of the native silktassel is more compact than the better known ?James Roof?. 'Evie' grows 12' tall by 12' wide, although it can be kept smaller. 'Evie' is an attractive if unassuming shrub for much of the year, it is a showstopper in late winter when its 8 to 10 inch creamy white male flower tassels emerge and transform the plant. Dark evergreen leaves and dense habit make it a good choice for a hedge or privacy screen, as well as a specimen plant. Can also be pruned into a small tree. Cultivars such as this are horticultural selections and hybrids, not part of the native ecology but work beautifully in the garden. Attracts beneficial insects, bees, provides bird habitat, and provides seed and fruit for birds. Horticultural selection of Garrya elliptica. The origin was from cuttings (1971) by Wayne Roderick, Kruze Ranch, Sonoma Co.; introduced into Saratoga Horticultural Foundation in 1975.
