Bark is very dark brown when young, maturing to a yellow-red-brown, becoming very thick and furrowed, breaking up into "jigsaw puzzle" like pieces. Eventually reaches 175' but not quickly. Adapted to full sun, well-drained soil and little or no summer water once established. Frost hardy to -40 °F, USDA zone 3.
