    Sedum rupestre 'Blue Spruce' is an evergreen groundcover cactus / succulent with blue foliage. In summer yellow flowers emerge. Features glaucous texture. Attracts bees making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens. Grows well with sun - mostly shade and occasional water. Drought tolerant once established. Does well in gritty and well-drained soil. A good option if you're seeking something heat tolerant.

    A sedum with blue-green foliage similar looking to that of a spruce tree. Flowers are yellow, small, and star shaped. A wonderful ground cover that is drought tolerant, deer resistant, and easy to care for.

    'Blue Spruce' sedum has the best light blue colored leaves of any plant we have grown and makes a fantastic groundcover as it forms a very dense mat of uniformly colored foliage. Plants establish quickly and spread by growing on the ground and rooting, and if you pinch the tip of a stem it will branch with five or more new stems. You can easily limit where the plant will spread by creating a solid wall out or rocks, bricks, or wood five inches tall as plants will not grow over this barrier easily.

    The best uses for Blue Spruce Sedum utilize its drought tolerance and its color. No rock garden is complete without at least three Sedum varieties and Blue Spruce should be one of them. If planted on the top of a rock wall, the stems will hang over the top like a curtain of thin blue foliage.

    These plants are very tough and quite cold hardy, yet appear somewhat tropical. Stonecrops can be grown in normal soil but much prefer loose and well drained mixes containing a lot of pumice. Water every 1-2 weeks to establish.

    Propagating Blue Spruce Sedum and Other Stonecrops
    Stems root easily - in the fall clip off a five inch long section of stem and bury the end in loose soil leaving the growing tip facing straight up. Water right away and the plant should be rooted by spring! You can also root cuttings easily during the active growing season under mist, or divide clumps in mid spring.

    Shipping Sedums
    Sedum plants ship throughout the entire year. Because they tend to have many but smaller roots as opposed to one central root system like trees or shrubs have, Sedums are usually shipped rolled up in paper with the root matt in the middle. When you receive your plant, just place it in its new location with the roots down and the foliage up. Throw about an inch of loose compost or coarse sand over the plant and water - the coarse sand or compost will wash down to cover the roots and leave most of the foliage above ground. Water every few days for two weeks and your plant will be fully established. Much easier than digging a hole for a woody plant!
