A favorite here at the farm, this glorious alpine willow from the steep, rocky mountain slopes of Hokkaido is prostrate, to only about one foot tall, but spreading out about six feet; very showy pale-yellow 2" catkins in spring are a delight, its spring leaves are covered in a downy fuzz that gives them a silvery look before they mature into deep-green glossy leaves; yellow fall color is pretty as are the twisted bare branches in winter; excellent on slopes or in large containers where their cascading nature can shine. Works well with dwarf conifers and small shrubs – Excels in rock gardens – superb in Asian themes – GORGEOUS golden winter stems – spring brings silver catkins – summer’s leaves are lush and covered in shimmery hairs – Sun to light shade, summer moisture preferred – any soil – easy. Yezo Willow is a treasure is in a class by itself! A groundcover Pussy Willow with gorgeous wide, reticulate deep green leaves that emerge in spring with beautiful silvery hair on top and bottom, much like you would find on a Pasque Flower and, it has typical (and beautiful) Pussy Willow blooms on Mahogany colored stems in early spring right after the snow melts. Beautiful flowing over a slopping spots, especially with a rock or two. Bright Yellow Fall Color. Doesn't like heat too much, so plant in shade in warmer zone. A Great Plant Picks - Miller Botanical Garden. Japanese native.
