Large showy heads of crimson florets appear on this woodland shrub in mid-season. PSh/M (not dry) acid: blue, alkaline: pink.
(AKA ‘ALPENGLUHEN’) Outstanding German cultivar that has to be my FAVORITE of all hydrangeas! Vigorous growth but only to 3-4’, compact and well rounded shrub with lush green foliage… BIG mophead blooms to 8” across start out rose pink, build up to flaming crimson red and smolder down to tints of bronze purple over many, many weeks from June to frost! Any moist, decent soil will do, takes sun in northern areas to part shade (half day morning is perfect). Only have room for ONE hydrangea – this be the ONE!!
Glowing Embers' Hydrangea produces deep pink or even red flowers, generally regardless of the soil pH. Generally, by keeping the soil more neutral or basic in pH the flowers will remain a deeper pink color. In extremely acidic soil, the flowers will take on more of a purple hue. This variety has one of the darkest flower colors of any of the mophead type Hydrangeas and is useful for contrasting with lighter color varieties or other light colored flowering plants. Many gardeners use 'Glowing Embers' as a backdrop behind bedding plants.
Deciduous, broadly rounded shrub with large round flower mopheads up to 8". Summer bloom color ranges from bright pink to carmine red. Flowers on old growth, so pruning should be done after flowering. Cut back stems to a pair of healthy buds. Salt and heat tolerant. Growth Rate fast

Compact huge red-rose mophead; sun tolerant
In cultivation for more than 60 years, this robust sumptuously colored German cultivar is still considered one of the finest mopheads. Pale green stems and bold, waxy and somewhat wrinkled medium green foliage sculpt its dense, small-statured globular form. A vivacious deep rosy red bedazzles each alluring rounded flower, defined by attractively spaced individual florets with pointed tips and upturned edges. Surprisingly sun tolerant, the red-tinged foliar margins echo the bloom hues, while autumn brings a suffusion of dark maroon to the entire leaf. 'Glowing Embers' is second-to-none for the smaller garden and promises to parade its marvelous hues for several months if a soil pH of 6.5 is maintained.
Our very best all around hydrangea We have grown this ever-perfect hydrangea for years and always sell out. Sometimes called "Glowing Embers" here in the US, the flower is crimson red when mature. A compact growing plant with shiny, dark green leaves and glowing red blooms make this a winner. Plant them in a hedge and it will add rich color and warmth to your garden. Alpengluhen Rates a "10" for foliage and bloom. Enjoy!
MOPHEAD. A mophead with huge flowers in colors of red to bright rosy pink to carmine.
