Large, strapping foliage holds up well all season and doesn't seem to garner interest from our slimy, sluggy friends. Makes a good Hosta companion. Unusual, smoky topaz flowers look good even after they are done blooming in mid-summer.
Exceptionally bold, handsome leaves, up to 10" long, making it a great accent plant in a rock garden to contrast the small-leaved ones that usually dominate. Flowers are, like most large-leaved gentians, not spectacular and stay pretty much closed.
Sturdy perennial from the foothills of the Himalayas, thick 2' tall stems are topped in late summer with tight clusters of flaring white tubular flowers over 18" wide rosettes of handsome foliage; easy to grow, tales sun in cool climates, light shade elsewhere, humus rich moist soils. Used in Asian medicine for arthritis and to calm nerves.
