Heirloom fruit is produced from June till October! My granddaughter's favorite strawberry…what it lacks in berry size it makes up for in flavor and production! Small red or white fruits with a delicate sweet flavor, sometimes with pineapple notes! 4-8" ta
Few plants will deliver like Fragaria vesca, also known as the Woodland, European or Alpine Strawberry. A pleasant, low growing dark-leaved plant with delicate white flowers, and the best part: amazingly flavorful, red berries! Now that these same berries are the darling of the gourmands and the foodies, this plant is still what we knew all along- remarkably easy to grow, pleasant to look at…and even better to eat! Also useful as a bedding plant in classic English garden design, such as those designed by Rosemary Verey. It’s low-growing, spreading habit adds great character to your garden beds. These plants are true survivors and can make a home in some truly inhospitable places. Any places like that around your house? Berries are small and amazingly flavorful. Production is measured in cups, not gallons, but your reward is immeasurable. Reproduction is by seed and stolon. Stolons are easily controllable by redirecting the arching umbilical cords to land within your growing colony of berry barons. Mother plants live up to 5 years or so and will slow in berry production after 3. Encouragement of their natural plant reproduction helps to keep a vibrant, vigorous rotation of plants that will become a permanent place of pride for your gardening skills. Fragaria vesca, prefers part shade to full shade in zones 3-7. Soil preference is acidic and should be amended with organic mulch.
