Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Naked branches are lit by copious tiny yellow flowers in late winter-early spring before they sprout leaves showily margined in white. The showy foliage makes a superb backdrop for the profuse bright-red fruit which is much loved by preserve makers. An outstanding variegated small tree to 15-25' that is perfect for any garden. Plant another variety for better fruit set. S/M
Very early spring bright yellow small umbels cover this large shrub or small tree, becoming oblong bright red, shiny, edible fruits in late summer. They're lovely as tart preserves. The pretty leaves feature bluish-green centers with cream margins. To do its best, this tree won't want full sun. It is disease-resistant and will tolerate clay soils. 20' T x 15' W Minimum temperature: -30?F
A grail plant for many, this strikingly variegated form of the deciduous cornelian cherry, with its green leaves marked in white, reaches 10-12 ft for us, with a compact umbrella shape, and yellow flowers in mid to late winter, followed by deep red, 1/2" fruit (with a pollinating partner) -- indeed, quite tasty, attracting birds, and making a lovely contrast with the glowing, variegated leaves in mid to late summer. Prefers rich moist soil in part shade but does well in full sun with mulch for cool roots and generous summer water. Frost hardy -30F, USDA zone 4. Does poorly in very hot places with high humidity.
One of our most favored small trees is this princeling of a cornel. Late winter flowers of yellow filamentous buttons followed by perfectly clean white variegation in the leaves and all further accented when the flowers turn into edible reddish fruits in late summer. Extremely hardy species and these are on their own roots and not grafted.
A unique variegated form of the Cornelian cherry with white to yellow margins and an extremely tough constitution. Young trees can't decide if they're shrubs or trees, so it's best to prune to create an appealing tree-like branching structure. Clusters of tiny, yellow flowers in early spring.
White margin variegation and extremely tough constitution, reminding one of the variegated Hedge maple. Young trees can't decide if they're shrubs or trees, so it's best pruned to create an appealing tree-like branching structure.
Cornus mas is a wonderful shrub to small tree. Profuse yellow flowers on bare branches extremely early in the spring, usually only witch hazels are in bloom earlier, which develop in late summer into generous clusteres of large, bright red fruits that are both edible and delicious. And on top of all that, in this form, a crisp tidy white variegated edge to the dark green leaves that looks spectacular all summer long. Long live and trouble free. Zone 4
Yellow flowers, green & white leaves. Edible red fruit summer. Attracts birds, red-purple fall color. Zones 5-9.
Variegated Cornelian Cherry is a shrubby tree to 12', has masses of yellow flowers on blackish limbs in late winter, edible fruit (pretty sour actually so it is mostly used for jelly, etc.) and good fall color: a super tree all-told. zone 5
The Cornelian Cherry comes from eastern Europe and is grown for a source of vitamin C. The fruit makes a great jelly. Flowers are produced in late January and are golden yellow. This cultivar has variegated white, pink green foliage so creates an almost year round small tree.
