Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Very upright (to 20-30') with attractively tiered branches and culms coloring with age to a handsome reddish-brown, this slow spreader makes a fine wind-break/hedge with uniquely flavored edible shoots. S/M
Called 'Temple Bamboo' because of its upright nature and thick foliage, which makes it great for planting in temples in Asia. There are generally three branches per node on Semiarundinaria fastuosa. When given enough direct morning sunlight, the canes will turn a burgundy red color, providing the 'Red' part of the common name 'Red Temple.' This is similar to Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis', whose new shoots turn red with sun exposure but only for a limited time. Semiarundinaria fastuosa 'Viridis' is similar to the species in appearance but the canes don't turn red with sun exposure.
We live in a round Temple although it is not obvious because of how we treat it. This bamboo might help remind us. to 25’
Native to Japan; Very vertical, tall architectural form. Makes good borders. Stately culms fade to purple with age. Withstands maritime exposure.
