Although several Indocalamus species have longer leaves, no other hardy bamboo has leaves are wide as Sasa palmata. This very cold hardy species will give any landscape an instant tropical feeling with the large leaves fanning out from the many long branches. The largest leaves we have measured were about five inches wide and eighteen inches long on a plant growing in deep shade.

Usually we do not fertilize our bamboo when planted in the ground, but this species is one of the exceptions as a slow release nitrogen source helps keep the leaves as vibrantly green as possible.

The one gallon and sometimes two gallon plants of this species tends to be fairly small compared to other bamboos because the leaves are smaller and the stems are short. During the second year when branching occurs the leaves will grow larger, causing the plant to suddenly catch up in size. This is generally true for most members of the Sasa, Pseudosasa, Indocalamus, and Pleioblastus genera.
