Attractively mounding groundcover popular for lavender-blue flower clusters and ease of cultivation in well-drained soils. S/M-D/GDr
An evergreen groundcover 1-3 ft. high x 6-8 ft. wide with blue flowers on small, dark green, holly-like foliage. Blooms in late winter and early spring. Planted near the coast, it's a good tough ground cover, but it will not tolerate full sun or drought in the interior. It's a fairly fast growing species. Deer don't prefer this one but will eat it if starving (as is the case with most "deer resistant" plants). Great for a coastal slope planting or in back of a perennial bed. One of best in beach sand. The significant value of this selection is in its dense habit and lustrous foliage. Endemic to California Provides nectar for bees and butterflies. No Historical Uses Found. Found in seaside bluffs and the slopes of the coastal mountains. Communitites located in Coastal Strand, Closed-cone Pine Forest, Northern Coastal Scrub, Douglas-Fir Forest, Chaparral Between 0 and 1640 feet.
This fairly prostrate Ceanothus makes a great ground cover in a summer droughty area. Medium blue flowers cover the 8' wide, 2' tall shrub in late spring. Mix with other drought hardy plants in full to part sun. Evergreen and frost hardy in USDA Zone 7.
