Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Baccharis Pigeon Point' is a gray-green shrub that grows into a 1' tall by 10' wide dark-green groundcover. Pigeon Point is great for slope stabilization and it requires low maintenance, and it is a moderate-to-fast-growing plant; used to cover large areas of ground. Intersperse with colorful plants of compatible watering (ceanothus, salvia, and monkey flower). Tolerates thinning & clipping; prune heavily to renovate every 3 years. Cultivars such as this are horticultural selections and hybrids, not part of the native ecology but work beautifully in the garden. Baccharis species are the nectar sources for most of the predatory wasps, native (small) butterflies and native flies. Useful for erosion control. Horticultural selection B. pilularis: origin from cuttings at Pigeon Pt., north coast, San Mateo Co.; introduced by Ken Taylor Nursery 1975.
Lower growing than most other cultivars and better suited to coastal gardens, it has larger and lighter green leaves than the species. Fast growing, it can reach 9' wide in 4 years. Can be utilized as an effective hedge.
Small oval bright green leaves, low spreading branches, tiny white flowers. Very adaptable. Deer-resistant, easy to prune. Many pollinators.
