This yarrow is absolutely stunning with deep red, summer blossoms on 2-3' stems and beautifully textured foliage. A wonderful, undemanding addition to pollinator gardens, xeriscapes, rock gardens... Deer and rabbit resistant, heat and drought tolerant. Deadheading will extend the blooming season and prevent spreading by seed. Plants may re-bloom if cut back after initial flowering.
Red Velvet Yarrow is a drought tolerant perennial flower with bright red flowers from early to late summer. Plants spread slow and form a dense carpet of foliage thick enough to prevent most weeds from growing through. Unlike many other similarly colored Yarrow varieties that tend to start producing pink flowers by mid-summer, 'Red Velvet' continues to produce dark red color throughout the summer. Red Velvet is a popular choice for florists due to the strong, tall stems and excellent color retention.
Propagating Red Velvet Yarrow
Yarrow is easily propagated in early spring by taking clump divisions. Digging out pieces at least four inches deep and three inches in diameter will encourage plants to flower heavily in their first season.

Watering and Fertilizing Red Velvet Yarrow
Red Velvet is a drought tolerant species but has a much shorter flowering season without regular summer irrigation. Plants in the ground flower best when watered twice per week during hot weather and fertilized once each spring with a slow release pellet like Osmocote. Yarrow prefers well drained soil but can grow in clay soils as well. When growing Yarrow in containers annual fertilizer applications are more important to maintain optimal flowering conditions, and watering will need to be more frequent.

Pruning/Deadheading Red Velvet Yarrow
Continual flowering is greatly increased by deadheading (removing the old flowers) but you can also occasionally prune the plant to a few inches tall if flowering has become less frequent. In the fall the leaves die back to the ground and will resprout in the spring, the old leaves can be removed for aesthetic purposes in the fall but they degrade into mulch quickly on their own.
Fabulous flat-topped fade-resistant red blooms with yellow eyes above grey-green foliage. Heat and drought resistant. There is just nothing 'Common' about this new yarrow! All yarrows eventually fade BUT this and the Seduction series Holds their vibrant, true red color for a long time. Probably the closest and it's really, really closed to true red. I hate to put in the word rosy red because red is the word, not rose, BUT if differs from Strawberry seduction by having a rose undertone to the red and the other has a slightly more strawberry undertone.

"A ""workhorse"" of the summer garden that is also a show horse! Flat flower clusters of garnet red sway over rich green ferny foliage, blooming all summer. A native flower, essential for enriching habitat for our bees and butterflies. Best in regular, well-drained soils."
Flat heads of rich red flowers float above slowly spreading mounds of ferny green leaves.Superior in colour to Achillea 'Fanal' being a deeper more solid red and not ageing so quickly to yellow.
