An armed and dangerous (well a little) living sculpture…one of my favorites as a single, delectable specimen in that special artsy-fartsy pot! Turn an octopus upside down, add a few spined arms, color him burgundy with a Jack Frost overcoat and set him up on that cute little patio table with a couple of umbrella drinks…TA DA! 6-8” tall and 12” wide, sun to part sun…gritty fast draining soil, water when dry and bring in when temps fall below freezing.
Dyckia ‘Burgundy Ice’ is an evergreen succulent that displays rosettes of dark burgundy leaves with white spines on the margins. Tall stems of bright orange flowers attract hummingbirds. Best in well-drained soil with regular water in summer, little in winter. No fertilization needed. Plant in containers, rock and cactus gardens, or as an accent. Thrives in extreme heat. Protect your PRINCE OF PARADISE™ from frost!
Surprisingly frost hardy, sharp spined succulent, with rosettes of long, narrow, pointed leaves in shades of burgundy to nearly black, all edged in distinctive white spines. Flowers are orange, adding to the color palette. To 6-12" tall and wide. Full sun for the best color in well-drained soil with little summer water necessary. Frost hardy to 20-25 °F, USDA zone 9. Possibly colder if really, really, really dry. Also does well in containers. Bromeliaceae
Long, succulent, burgundy leaves and white teeth make for a dramatic display. Dyckias are the most cold tolerant of the Bromeliad family. They are drought tolerant but thrive on frequent watering during the active growing season. Keep plants on the dry side during cold weather.
Tender but awesome container plant. Plant this in a pot with an interesting rock or maybe some cobalt blue glass or a piece of driftwood or all three and suddenly you have a very Hobbsian jewelbox container of shocking beauty.
