One of the best groundcovers for coastal and dry landscapes, this fast-growing shrub to 2' high is wide spreading to 6-10'. Lovely, narrow gray-green leaves make the perfect back drop to both the pretty pale pink early-spring flowers and the mahogany bark. Very adaptable, it can handle summer irrigation if drainage is good, drought, deer and salt-spray tolerant. This is a wonderful choice for embankments, slopes and rock gardens. S-PSh/M-D/GDr
Narrow blue-green leaves cover ground-hugging, horizontal branches that twist and turn upward at the ends. Branches begin pinkish and mature to purple-brown. This one is a faster grower than many manzanitas and will take some shade and also tolerate some irrigation (otherwise drought-tolerant). It aims to fit in. 2't x 6'w; evergreen.
An easy manzanita, a wonderful choice for a sunny hillside that doesn't get watered in the summer. To 2 ft tall x 6 ft wide with blue, evergreen foliage that looks oh so nice against the cinnamon colored bark. Prune back the tips extra bushiness. Full sun to light shade in well-drained soil with no summer water necessary once established. Cold hardy to 0F, USDA zone 7.
Is a low grower, but fairly broad (2’x6’). The irregular growth is fairly loose when young, but as the plant matures it fills into a dense shrub. The small urn shaped white flowers appear in early Spring. This plant is a California native. But, has been hardy for many years in Oregon.
No, contrary to popular belief, Pacific Mist is not what falls out of the Seattle sky eleven months out of the year. It is the name for this wonderful manzanita hybrid, the silvery-grey leaves of which, when you desperately desire relief from the heat and drought as you long for those rainy winter days to hydrate your garden, will recall those nice drizzly winter afternoons. This cultivar has less conspicuous flowers than some, but the leaves, red stems and pink new growth are very attractive, and of course, the smooth red bark is too. This plant might be classed as a tall groundcover, forming a broad, low mound to about 2' high and 10' wide, and growing much more quickly than most manzanitas. One of the easiest Arctostaphylos to grow, it will readily adapt to most soils and tolerate a little summer water, but not too much. It will even handle a little bit of shade, especially in hot climates. Hardy to about 5 °F. Needs good drainage, easy.
Easy to grow low evergreen semi-groundcover. This gets just 2' high but about 6' wide. Handsome blue-gray leaves are further set off by the cinnamon red bark and the light sprinkling of small white flowers are just an added pleasure. Drought tolerant and wants good drainage.
