Slow expanding mound of evergreen lustrous leaves of deep green; prostrate growth habit – 18” tall and about 4’ wide. Yellow green flower clusters in spring are accented with red (April May) later forming fuzzy green gooseberries. Easy to grow in light to moderate shade, decent soils, drought tolerant when established but appreciates summer irrigation...collected in China by Steve Hootman of the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden in Washington State. An uncommon species collected by Steve Hootman, one of the best plant hunters of the modern era. Steve is the Director at the Rhodendron Species Botanic Garden and he found this in the Chinese Himalaya. Smaller and more prostrate than R. laurifolium. Greenish flowers.
