Incredibly rich and varied hues unfurl from these hybrids. Colors available vary season to season, but they will always, always delight you with their colorful surprises. Short and delicious! - you'll think you're in a candy store. Minimum temperature: 0 °F
Open pollinated seedlings from a very wide color range these evergreen Iris swarm originated as the second and third generation of a hand crossing effort Eric Hammond has at his home. Varying in height at bloom, some are clear yellow, pink, orange, or blue, while others have beautiful contrasting single coloration. 6 - 12 in. tall, full sun to partial shade, summer drought is accepted with grace.
A large group derived primarily from the two irises listed above, all form clumps of sword-like foliage ranging from 6-24" tall. Large flowers are borne in spring in numerous colorful shades; we recommend particularly vigorous cultivars such as 'Canyon Snow' with clean, white flowers. Provide sun or part shade in reasonably well-drained soil with moderate to occasional water once established. Hardy to 0F.
Gorgeous clumps of dark green leaves give way to spectacularly colored blooms from spring through summer. Hardy to 10°.
We got this from a friend who said she was bequeathing us Iris graminea - not! This looks like what might the dwarf form of Iris douglasiana but to be safe we are calling it a Pacific Coast Hybrid. Pedigree & provenance aside, we're looking at a good evergreen tough Iris with light blue flowers.
Delicate, beautiful & TOUGH! Wild forms of this native iris are found all along the coast of California where the elegant 4” flowers are predominantly purple to cream, but breeders have incorporated genetic material from other species & stretched the color range to include browns, oranges, yellows & reds, with a huge array of forms & markings. These are seed grown with an assortment of colors. Who knows what you may discover! Bloomtime is March & April. Foliage is clumping & evergreen, 1’ tall & 4’ wide. NO SUMMER WATER IS REQUIRED, once the plants are established. Great under oaks (DRY SHADE!!) Likes a little grit & drainage, but thrives in clay as well. Inland, give more shade. By the coast, full sun is just fine.
