Seldom offered woodland ground cover with mini Bergenia-like leaves and a spreading habit like Saxifraga. Rosettes of fuzzy foliage send out runners to create a 4-6” tall & 4’ wide patch in a several years (easy to pull where you want to limit its spread). Unusual sputnik spring flowers in clusters are pink and white and go for weeks. Moist shade in decent soil make this happy!
This stoloniferous (and therefore spreading) Chinese ground cover has interesting white flower clusters with conspicuous stamens tipped with pink anthers and surrounded by light green bracts. In March and April flowers are held just above large, fleshy, ciliated leaves with scalloped edges, on stout red stems. The low-lying, overlapping leaves are useful for suppressing weeds. When new, they have an interesting pinkish-tan color and then become deep green with sometimes a reddish tinge. Chrysosplenium is a smaller and interesting cousin of Bergenia, both of the Saxifragaceae family. Possibly deer-resistant. 10" T Minimum temperature: 5°F
This robust Chinese groundcover was shared with us by one of the great unsung planthunters of our era, Steve Hootman. We've seen other species of this genus in Sichuan and have always been ensnared by its curious flowers. Saxifrage family, this is strongly stoloniferous in moist shade.
