(Montauk Daisy) Late blooming daisy from Japan with mounds of glossy, succulent foliage that gives rise to 2-3’ stems leaded with 3” white rayed, yellow disc flowers in Sept>Oct. Great cut flower and is loved by last minute pollinators. Full sun, well drained dryish soil, drought tolerant, deer resistant. Pinch back to promote a shrubby shape.
Who knows anymore? Chrysanthemum, Leucanthemum, Dendranthemum, the taxonomists have been hard at work confusing us with more revisions. I've always called this cool plant with succulent foliage Chrysanthemum. It has large daisy like flowers in mid to late Summer.
Nipponanthemum nipponicum or Nippon daisy is a little-known yet easy-to-grow, fall-flowering perennial that emerges in spring to form an architectural two foot wide clump clothed with glossy dark green sedum-like leaves. In early fall and well into November the entire clump is smothered with a striking display of large pure white daisies. Plant in well drained soil.
Large white daisy-like blooms emerge in late summer and continue until after a hard frost.
The first time we saw this handsome shrubby plant in bloom we could barely believe our eyes, for in October it was completely covered in pristine white daisy blooms- a flower we had only associated with early summer before. Legend has it it came from Japan and washed ashore on Montauk Island on Long Island, perhaps the only survivor of a shipwreck off the treacherous shores. The almost succulent foliage is pleasantly pungent and looks good all season long, the late blooming flowers delight all, bees and butterflies too!
Montauk Daisy, Nippon Daisy - Bold foliage, semi succulent with flower stems up to 3' tall bearing beautiful pure white daisy flowers in fall. Likes sun and well drained soil. Hardy zone 5-9
Formerly Chrysanthemum, this is a true jewel and one of the plants we always looked forward to seeing at the UBC rock garden in the fall where the tabletop sized patch of low dense dark green leaves would be alight with outrageous large white mum flowers. Now we have it!
