Low growing evergreen mat gives rise to surreal cobalt blue trumpets – numerous in spring, sporadic summer & fall; this plant always garners attention! 3-6” tall spreading slowly to 12”. Adaptable to average soil but enjoys the gritty rock garden siting as well; regular water and feeding will push it along. Critter and deer resistant. An easy-to-grow selection of a genus that can be a challenge.
According to J.Eschman the best trumpet gentian to grow, very adaptable. Extra large, intense velvet-blue, upward facing trumpets. The main blooming season is spring but they can re-bloom throughout summer and fall. The leathery foliage is evergreen. For any good garden soil, needs light shade in hotter regions. 3 1/2" pots - about 1 1/2 to 2 times larger plants than our regular size. In years, 3 years old instead of 2.
I want my burial mound covered solid in this - seriously, it's that good. Wavy edged leaves on a low evergreen clumper with big deep blue trumpets on 2"+ stems. An established clump of this is simply riveting with dozens of big flowers the blue you dream of. Rich soil and moist. Loves food.
