Wolfgang Oehme gave 5 stars to this 3-4? mounder as a landscape plant for its bold architectural leaves and masses of white flowers over a long summer season. S/M
This is a plant with presence! White dragon grows five to seven feet tall into an arching vase shape. It is topped with astilbe-like masses of white flowers on every stem often from summer well into fall. The flowers are followed by pinkish seed heads. A clumping, non-invasive plant, white dragon looks great at the back of the border with miscanthus, Sambucus nigra 'Black Beauty' and other large perennials. Loves moist soils but quite tolerant of drought once established.
We crashed the PPA reception; only to be greeted by a strangely familiar woman dressed as Persicaria polymorpha, what does this mean? I have no idea; actually, she didn't look all that much like Persicaria, although after a few hours at the Blue Coyote the resemblance did improve. A bold alluring statement with masses of white flowers, Persicaria is just the thing for gardens or yuppie bars if not the Bloated Goat and is absolutely fantastic in a Sunny Border. ZONE 5
Visitors always ask about the large Astilbe look a like plant in the back of one of our borders. It is Persicaria polymorpha, commonly called Giant Fleece Flower. We've been a little cautious offering plants from this genus, as some members are notorious invaders. However, this species forms clumps and does not run. It does become a huge plant…. 6' + all and wide, so it is a subject that can be viewed well from some distance. Grow Persicaria in full sun or partial shade, in average to moist soil. It has proven amazingly drought tolerant once established.
All the rage in Europe is this Mother of all Fleece Flowers and for darn good reason. This BEHAVES ITSELF! it doesn't run or seed, just clumps and BLOOMS ALL SUMMER UNTIL FROST! Get over the "I don't do Persicaria's" thing - this rocks. It is a geyser of bloom fer gawd's sake.
