Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Prolific (up to 100 spikes!) early summer flowers are decorated with a wonderfully unique bi-color combination of dark violet-purple highlighted with a yellow keel on this almost-native 4-5' blue-green prairie wildflower; a lovely introduction from the Chicago Botanic Garden. PPAF S/M-D-GDr
Has purple violet buds that open to rich blue lupine-like flowers with yellow centers. A great plant for the perennial or shrub border.
Deep purple buds open to smoky violet-purple flowers with lemon yellow keels. The long-lasting flowers appear on upright spikes in late spring about 1-2 weeks later than 'Starlite Prairieblues'. Three year old plants can have 100+ flowering stems! Continued interest is provided by the attractive, blue-green, trifoliate foliage and the charcoal black seed pods in fall. This is a large cultivar growing up to five feet tall so give it plenty of room to grow. A hybrid of B. australis x sphaerocarpa. Photo courtesy of Walters Gardens.
Hosting some 100 bicolored flowering stems in just 3 years time, this Dr. Jim Ault cross between australis and spaerocarpa exudes vitality galore. The attractive, bushy blue-green pedestal hoists 32 in. tall spikes studded with umpteen dark coppery purple blooms enhanced by lemon yellow keels. Splendid in bud with bright green calyxes and buttery tips, and later infused with violet as the blossoms age, 'Twilite's unique floral hues make a toasty counterpoint to its cool-toned foliage that looks neat all season. An extremely robust and vigorous bicolor Baptisia, from a controlled cross of Baptisia (australis x sphaerocarpa). Developed by Dr. Jim Ault at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, Illinois. Three-year-old plants produce upward of a hundred flowering stems covered with deep violet-purple flowers highlighted by lemon-yellow keels. The inflorescences are held above to partially in the handsome blue-green foliage and can be up to 32" long. A mature plant measure 5' tall and upwards of 7' wide, looking like a symmetrical shrub. Not for the faint of heart!
32" tall spires of deep violet bicolor blooms are accented with lemon-yellow keel petals rising above attractive blue-green foliage. Jim Ault of the Chicago Botanic Garden introduced this new robust Baptisia, a hybrid of B. australis and sphaerocarpa.
Purple buds open to reddish purple flowers with lemon yellow keels on clumping perennial 4' x 4' Blue-green foliage. PP19011
Baptisias are revered in the Heartland where they take the heat and the cold and just perform. Politics aside, these are underused plants here out west where we can grow any damn thing. Great leaves and drop-dead coppery violet-purple pea flowers with a yellow keel. Long lived and stubborn.
