Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Tough and easy care, this 3-4' x 3-4' prairie wildflower selection bears masses of soft-lavender-blue with butter yellow "pea" flowers on 2' stalks in early summer; a "Prairie Blues" from Chicago Botanic Garden. S/M-D/GDr PPAF
Long spikes of light blue with light yellow petal base begin blooming in late May and last for several weeks. Seed pods and soft foliage in a rounded habit make a handsome plant for the rest of the season. This is one tough plant that doesn't mind poor soil, but don't try to move it, it's tap root won't like it. This is from a collection bred at the Chicago Botanic Garden by Dr. Jim Ault. 3' x 3' Ships when dormant. Minimum temperature: -30 °F
Twinkling like stars, a sky full of lupine-like periwinkle-blue flowers are set aglow by creamy white bases, known as keels. The deep violet-lavender buds populate numerous 2 ft. tall bicolored spires rising above blue-tinged oval leaflets on gently arching stems. Bred by Dr. Jim Ault from the Chicago Botanical Gardens, this robust australis and bracteata cross is a medium-sized, soft-hued perennial that can be paired with Centaurea 'Purple Heart' for an engaging medley. (ppaf)
A selection from a controlled cross of Baptisia (australis x bracteata) made by Dr. Jim Ault at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, Illinois. A medium-sized plant growing to only 3' tall, this selection boasts 24" flower stems bearing a profusion of bicolored blooms. Deep violet-lavender buds unfurl into lovely periwinkle-blue blooms with contrasting buttercream keels. This is one of the first Baptisia to bloom in the trials at the Chicago Botanic Garden (USDA Zone 5). A vigorous but well-maintained plant with somewhat arching branches, reminiscent of the B. bracteata parent.
A new selection of False Indigo from the breeding program of Jim Ault, with soft lavender-blue flowers with a glow of white near the petals' base. This sturdy plant grows -34" tall and equally as wide, blooming in late spring for us. Combine with Geranium 'Jolly Bee' and Iris siberica 'White Swirl'. PPAF
Tough long-lived perennial that is rock hardy. This newer hybrid bred from Midwest natives has attractive soft blue pea-like flowers touched with a white underside and the flowers are carried on long spikes. Neat rounded pea leaflets on a plant 3'-4' tall and as wide. Takes dry when established.
