Attract bees, hummers and butterflies with this tough perennial! Forms lovely clumps to 3’ wide of upright stems 3-4’ tall that are topped with eye catching red, spidery blossoms in summer. Plants are pleasantly fragrant. Monarda enjoys loamy or sandy soils and average moisture. Jacob Kline is very resistant to powdery mildew which can be a problem on this genus. Full sun in all but hottest climates.
Once called Oswego tea, as the Oswego tribe was drinking fragrant teas of this herb when early botanist Bartram encountered the tribe. A flavor combination of citrus and mint, very refreshing. This selection is the best of the red bee balms, with early and large flower crowns of glowing crimson. June to August bloom.
Jacob Cline' is similar to 'Gardenview Scarlet' with very large, bright red florets in tight clusters atop stocky, three to four foot tall, square stems from midsummer to fall. This variety is one of the most mildew resistant. Monarda is native to eastern North America, is easy to grow and multiplies quickly. The flowers' sweet nectar attracts scores of hummingbirds, butterflies and bees to the garden. The aromatic foliage smells like mint when crushed and is often used to flavour teas. Rich red mildew/rust resistant
A classic monarda, tall vigirous plants to 4 feet or more with prolific, bright red flowers much loved by hummingbirds. Can spread aggressively when happy. The foliage tends to mildew especially if not grown in full sun with good air circulation, which is kind of ugly but doesn't hurt the plant too much. Just plant something else slightly short in front to hide the mildewed leaves and enjoy the brilliant flowers. Zone 4
Bees need balm now more than ever and you and Jacob here can help. Shaggy purple-pink flowers on a mildew and deer resistant plant puts on a show pretty much all the last half of summer. You can use the flower petals and leaves to flavor teas, soups or any saute.
