Valeriana phu is the long cultivated source of medicinal Valerian, a mild tranquilizer, phu probably refers to the smell as in phuuuu this really stinks, the plant however is very attractive coming up brilliant gold in spring and eventually turning lime green, its tall to 1.5m with officianalis like clusters of white flowers. ZONE 5
A truly golden perennial, the upright, highly divided leaves emerge in spring in golden-chartreuse -- making a great foil for dark purple hellebores -- and settle into lime green during the summer. June flowers are flat-topped and white -- not the reason for growing this often overlooked color spot. Easy to grow in sun to part shade in any soil that is consistently moist -- the more light the more summer water. Reaches several feet tall x 2 ft side. Frost hardy to -20F, USDA zone 5.

Golden Valerian. I don't the origin of the species name but I do know there is no phu like a gold phu. I love this plant. I can't help it, I'm a phu for love. Ok, I'll quit phuling around. Brilliant exhilarating spring gold foliage greening up in summer. Stems to 4' with tiny white but very fragrant flowers.
