Striking flowers, before the leaves, are coppery red inside with bright yellow spurred petals outside; somewhat sparse as a groundcover but wonderful in the shady border or wild garden. PSh-Sh/M
Drama queen! Very attractive, evergreen foliage, 8-12" tall in a slowly expanding clump…brazen flowers in spring are held aloft of the leaves in coppery orange with red and yellow accents. Revels in rich organic soil, but tolerates lean soils, tree roots and dry shade! Morning sun to part shade…no maintenance. Try this lovely at your woodland edge…needs a few years to really reach its potential – worth waiting for!
Bright green foliage / small orange flowers.
We bet you'll take your hats off to this 'Bishop's Hat'. Its intriguing flowers have petals of yellow, sepals of coppery orange, anthers of green, and spurs adorned with red streaks. The light green spring foliage is spiny-toothed and has a reddish margin. We plant it alongside our shaded steps and benches amid Helleborus 'Ivory Prince', so that we can enjoy the detail and contrasting colors.
A garden hybrid between Epimedium pinnatum colchicum and Epimedium alpinum with coppery orange flowers, it has been around for quite a while but remains an excellent garden plant. ZONE 4
Relatively small flowers but with broad orange sepals; a rare color among Epimediums. Cup and short spurs are yellow. The evergreen foliage is purple tinted in spring and again in fall. Moderately spreading, about 6" a year and drought tolerant.
Barrenwort" or "Bishop's Cap" have so much going for them...charming flowers, handsome foliage, deer resistance, tolerance of dry shade. Epimedium x warleyense is a durable and vigorous selection with dainty pale yellow and orange sepals. The always attractive olive green, heart shaped foliage is tinted with a red margin. 12" x 12". Slow at first but very long lived. 5 pt. shade/shade
A lovely little semi-evergreen ground cover for part shade to shade with copper-orange and yellow fairy flowers that rise on wiry stems in April before the new leaves emerge. Remove old foliage in February if you like tidyness. Forms a clump 18" high by about 3 ft wide. Loves rich. moist soil, but can tolerate dry conditions as well. Hardy in USDA zone 5a. Named after Warley Place gardens and one of the biggest plant addicts in history.
Bright wild salmon orange flowers in spring is the hallmark of this selection. Tough perennial which slowly spreads a few inches per year. We trim of the old foliage in early spring to best enjoy the flowers and make way for fresh new growth.
