Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Looking like no other Yucca, this is truly one of the most distinctive and attractive of all Yucca species, coming mostly from California and Baja California. Its perfect rosettes of narrow bluish leaves combine splendidly with desert plants of coarser texture and more open habit. Unfortunately, the plant dies after flowering, but this may take as long as 50 years from the time it is planted out. My collection comes from rather large plants at 6,550' in the San Gabriel Mountains, whose rosettes were about 4.5' across with occasional offsets. These plants should be hardy to at least 0 °F, and should be well suited to the Pacific Northwest. Yucca whipplei is considered to be challenging, though certainly possible, to grow in climates with summers that are hot, humid and rainy. It is well adapted to a moderate, dry summer climate and should be used much more in the Pacific Northwest.
