Nursery contributed plant descriptions

With all the brouhaha over Mexican plants, it's easy to overlook showstoppers like this amazing plant right in our own backyard. This enormous, trunking Nolina comes from remote mountain ranges in the interior of Southern California. In the wild, it reaches 15' tall with a crown of stiff green leaves that may be up to 12' across, atop a 2-3' thick trunk - in cultivation, with plenty of water and fertilizer, who knows how large it may grow? Yucca schidigera and several species of large cacti growing alongside it in the wild all look puny in comparison. The flower spikes are also an amazing sight, reaching up to 12' tall and 5' wide - in fact, the first one I spotted was visible from half a mile away. I have not heard of anyone collecting, growing, or offering this plant, but I would be surprised if it is not easy to grow like other Nolinas. My collection comes from 5,000' in the Kingston Mountains, the coldest place that it is found in the wild, where it is grows mostly on north-facing slopes: it may be a relict from when the climate of southern California was cooler and wetter. In the wild it is able to survive brushfires by growing a new head of leaves. It should be hardy certainly to at least 0 °F, perhaps much lower. Be among the first to try this exceptional and rare offering! or best germination, soak seeds in warm water overnight, then sow in warm, humid, sealed environment.
