Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Native to a few mountainous areas of southern California, this attractive species is occasionally grown in the Southwest, but it deserves much wider use. Stiff, spiky, green leaves quite different from those of N. microcarpa are held on clusters of short trunks to 3 - 5' tall. The flowers are produced generously on spikes rising up to 12' above the plant, putting on a stunning show, a feature that is seldom written about, though I'm not sure why. My collection from 4,500' in the San Jacinto Mountains should result in quite hardy plants: it should certainly be able to tolerate 0 - 5 °F, possibly lower. Spectacular plant! For best germination, soak seeds in warm water overnight, then sow in warm, humid, sealed environment.
