Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This form is very different, forming much smaller and very rounded rosettes which, when offsets are formed, have the interesting habit of being oriented in different directions in the clump. The terminal spines on each leaf are very large, prominent, and all oriented in exactly the same direction. It is an exquisite and unique plant, which I did not appreciate until I saw it in the wild. Like the usual form of A. utahensis, it prefers very dry conditions and should be grown in soil without organic matter in wet climates, with some rain protection if possible. This collection from a mountaintop at 5,150' near Goodsprings, Nevada should be hardy to at least -5 °F, perhaps much lower, especially in dry climates. DS.
