Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This slow growing species is the most northerly occurring Agave in the wild, and thus it is much esteemed for its cold-hardiness, especially in drier climates. It forms tight rosettes of dusky green leaves, with white teeth and a long white spine at the end of each. The rosettes offset to form large clumps over time. Although not usually considered very suitable for wet climates, it has grown to maturity and flowered in Vancouver, BC. I think the key may be to use a very gravelly soil free of organic matter, replicating the conditions under which it grows in the wild. This collection is from 5,050' near Peach Springs, Arizona. Collections from this area are described as “small” by many collectors, but I didn't think these plants were so small for this species. It should be cold hardy to at least -10 °, perhaps quite a bit lower by some accounts. DS.
