Nothofagus alpina is a broadleaf deciduous or semi-evergreen tree with green foliage. In spring chartreuse flowers emerge followed by green fruit. Grows well with sun and regular water. Does well in acidic, rich and well-drained soil. A good option if you're seeking something verticillium wilt resistant.

Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Nothofagus or the “Southern Beeches” are a group of shrubs and trees from the Southern Hemisphere. Although related to beech and oak, they are rather different looking, most having smaller leaves and a fabulous fine-textured appearance. This species from the High Andes is one of the hardiest, and some think that it is of hybrid origin. So far it has been semi-deciduous for me, and it is vigorous and easy to grow. It will probably tolerate -10 °F.
