Perhaps the hardiest variety, this small upright shrub (to 3' x 3') is especially pretty when it produces its small dark-red and purple flowers during much of the summer; your hummers will love it too! S-PSh/M
This cultivar has dark green leaves with a faint bronze sheen. Its narrow, dangling, dark pink and purple flowers bloom throughout the season.
One of the hardiest fuchsias available, 'Riccartonii' has masses of red and purple small flowers dripping from the gracefully arching branches. A classy selection for containers--hummingbirds are sure to find it. Where hardy, prune late winter to 1.5' to stimulate fresh growth.
This hardy fuchsia has green foliage and bright magenta red flowers. The flowers grace the arching stems in profusion throughout the summer. Fuchsia magellanica is native to Chile where I have seen it forming small trees with thick trunks. In our climate it tends to be a semi-evergreen, multi-stemmed shrub to about three feet. In most winters the woody stems overwinter. This species is the most reliably hardy of all fuchsia and will always come back from the base. Hummingbirds love this plant.
Small leaves & flowers red/purple
The hardiest Fuchsia, wintering over in zone 6 in protected spots. Beloved by hummingbirds, the slender red and violet flowers adorn shrubby plants from July until frost. This plant can easily reach 4-6' tall and wide in milder climates. Of course it can always be grown as a container plant if you live in cold winter areas, and its size will be a more restrained 2' x 2'.
This form of Fuchsia magellanica has more delicate, pointed, pale green leaves, with pink undertones rather than red, and wider internodes. The flowers are just as showy and it produces fruit that can be eaten if you run out of Luma apiculata berries. For me it is top hardy to about 22 °F, but it always regrows from the base. Results from the Spokane area suggest that this and other forms of F. magellanica may have greater root hardiness than previously believed, perhaps to USDA zone 6 or even lower.
