If you are looking for a 'Wow!' plant, here it is. Long racemes of brilliant orange and pink blossoms hang all over this fabulous evergreen winter into spring, right when you need flowers the most! A protea relative from Tasmania, this species has lovely deep olive-green foliage and creates an open, spreading shrub 5-6' high and slightly wider. This is the prefect shrub for xeriscape gardens and a real treat for hummingbirds. This cultivar really is a must for warm climate gardens. S-M-D
This winter bloomer has weird (one description I found was a psychedelic spiders). It's so nice to have a 6'-8' evergreen shrub blooming in winter.
Winter flowering, evergreen shrub, to 6 x 6 ft, a Protea relation from southeastern Australia with frilly, orange flowers in winter and occasionally through the year. This selection was made for leaves that are green rather than the gray-silver of the species. Best in sun to part sun with good drainage and regular water until established. As with all proteas, avoid fertilizer with phosphorus. Frost hardy in USDA zone 8.
Evergreen shiny leaves gold-tang flowers Jan-April Favorite.
Very hardy winter blooming shrub from Tasmania which Ciscoe proclaims as his favorite plant of all time or at least until he talks about the next plant. We agree though - this plant totally rules. No problems whatsoever but little or no fertilizer. Buff orange flowers. Shorter selection.
This very showy cultivar differs from the basic form of this species in having rusty orange flowers in more prolific, large, compound racemes, thus covering the plant much more thoroughly than the regular form (though the new growth still sticks up above the flowers.) Also, the leaves are rounder and a little bit less silvery and the plant (in my garden anyways) has a more open, spreading habit to about 6' tall by 9' wide. Like the regular form, it has done well in my garden with no care, though it does seem to be just a shade less hardy. Hardy to about 10 °F and possibly lower. Australia.
