Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Zn 9. Silvery gray foliage with red flowers.
Mounding shrub with grey leaves and showy rose-red flower clusters, in the Protea family. Do not fertilize, do not overwater. Hardy to 20 °F.
Of the many outstanding forms of this species, 'Penola' is perhaps the best known, with tiny felty, silver-grey leaves that give the plant a deceptively xeric appearance. These are hidden by audaciously large, pink flowers which may begin in late winter, peaking in spring. Achieving a mature height of no more than 2-3', it is an attractive shrub that will not consume too much space in the garden. In the Pacific Northwest, it demands a situation in full hot sun. I have been very impressed with its cold hardiness, and it should be heat loving enough for the Southeast US as well. Hardy to 10 °F or below. Australia.
