This sweetly-scented, purple blooming pea-shrub is so very cool! Originating from the North Island, New Zealand it has a very curious appearance and is one of our most asked about shrubs when it's in bloom in the border. Hardier than it might look; USDA zone 8. If I describe this New Zealand native as a sprawling mass of green sticks, it might not sound that exciting. So instead, I will call it an architecturally distinctive and enticing species of a most unique nature. Often mostly leafless, this one is known to grow some leaves at times. More importantly, it produces showy, pleasantly scented purple and white flowers in profusion. In New Zealand, it is planted to attractive to attract wildlife to the garden, especially those cute little Moas. Not only that, it will fix nitrogen, in case your nitrogen is broken. With a semi-weeping, shrubby habit, it may achieve 10' over time. Hardy to somewhere around 10 - 15 °F.
