Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Handsome, long-lived and useful, this wonderful tree flowers profusely and is excellent for honey production. It is also commonly coppiced as its juvenile, silvery, ovate foliage is much loved for flower arrangements; a fine fast-growing ornamental to 60-100' with glossy lance-shaped leaves and grey bark exfoliating to reveal lovely white patches. Every year we carry a number of different cold hardy eucalyptus species. They are evergreen, fast-growing trees often with bluish-green, grey, or silver foliage. They usually have tall columnar shapes that do not cast too much shade. Eucalyptus are great for contributing to that subtropical look in your garden or for a spot that demands an intriguing signature tree. In the past we have carried: subcrenulata, parvifolia, dalrympleana, bridgesiana, neglecta, johnstonii, ovata, perriniana and more.
Contorted tree to 50'. Australia. For a variation on the 'rounded juvenile leaves' theme seen in eucalyptus, try this species, which has alternate, rather than opposite, juvenile leaves that are heart-shaped rather than round. Besides having potential as a foliage plant, it also makes an attractive tree with a contorted habit, long pendulous leaves and rather showy white flowers in late summer. This species is popular in the Southeast for its ability to thrive in hot, humid conditions and grow back very vigorously if it freezes to the ground. It has also been successful in the desert climate of Las Cruces, New Mexico. It seems to be hardy to about 10 - 15 °F.
