This wonderfully vigorous, spreading, dense ground cover becomes a mat 6-12" tall while spreading as wide as 6-10 feet! With dark green leaves and small urn-shaped, pink flowers followed by showy mahogany berries. A wonderful plant for banks and rock walls; adaptable, does well in regular garden conditions. S/M-D/GDr
Point Reyes' is super-tough with superb heat and drought tolerance. Spreading, mat-forming evergreen shrub; thick, dark green, rounded and trailing-to-arching, snake-like branches and small, leathery leaves. It grows from 1.5' tall and 4-6' wide. Great in full sun on the coast or with a little shade inland, it produces sweet clusters of small bell-shaped, pearly white to pale pink flowers blooming mid-Spring followed by red berries late summer to fall. Flowers attract bees; fruits are eaten by birds; in winter the foliage turns a beautiful russet bronze-red. Beautiful in foundation plantings, rock gardens or mixed borders. CULTIVARS such as this are horticultural selections and hybrids, they do not play a part in the native ecology but work beautifully in a garden. Bees and butterflies love the dense clusters of flowers and birds enjoy the small fruits. ?Point Reyes? manzanita is a horticultural selection of A. uva-ursi originating from cuttings found in Point Reyes, Marin County in 1949. The Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Garden introduced Arctostaphylos uva-ursi ?Point ReYes? in 1956.
This form from California tolerates heat and drought better than usual. Planting this all over western Washington instead of 'Massachusetts' would be a grand idea. t's not as cold hardy as the other forms, but still handles at least 0 °F without any trouble, and perhaps lower.
