Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Madronas in Texas? You bet! It's not a common tree, seldom offered by nurseries, and seldom seen in gardens. Yet it's not too hard to find in several west Texas mountain areas, including the Davis Mts., the Chisos and the Guadalupes. It also grows south into Mexico. One of the most sought after cold-hardy broad-leafed evergreen trees its smooth grey-green leaves are more leathery than most Arbutus, and its outstanding rugged form and smooth olive-green to tan peeling bark and autumn berries are outstanding. In habitat it grows on rocky limestone soils: while it tolerates high pH, I'd hesitate to conclude it requires it, since other species of Arbutus are acidophilic. It should handle at least -15 °F with ease, perhaps lower. [CS or DS.]
