Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Large, thick leaves are beautifully and richly striped in bold bands of green, cream and white. The foliage is a gorgeous complement to the attractive red to green culms of this graceful spreading 4-6' bamboo. This running bamboo should be contained with a barrier or kept in a container to prevent exuberant spreading. It makes a stunning specimen for the shade garden. PSh/M
Sasaella masamuneana 'Albostriata' is one of the most attractive variegated groundcover species, growing to a height of about 1-2 feet. Generally the spread is slow, especially in hard soils, as the rhizomes are thin and don't have as much traveling ability as other, larger runners. This is one of our favorite plants for lining walkways and paths as it is easily managed and takes to trimming well. In fact, this species will often benefit from trimming to or near ground level each winter.
When the leaves emerge in the spring, many of them are close to completely white with thin green stripes. Leaves which are produced later in the season are generally mostly green with thin white stripes, while the last leaves of the season tend to be almost entirely green. The leaves on this species are usually around one inch wide and up to nine inches long, making this one of the larger leafed groundcover bamboo species. The regular species, Sasaella masamuneana, is similar but lacks the variegation.

A cold hardy bamboo good to 0 F. Large green leaves striped in white or cream.
