Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Round leaves up to a foot or so across, very attractively splashed with white and cream popping out of the ground on petioles maybe 8 inches or so high. Not nearly as aggressive as the other petasites. It runs about a bit in the shady border here, but plays nicely (and looks beautiful with) the other perennials. Petasites generally prefer wet, boggy soil, but we've got this one in a fairly dry, sandy bed that gets no supplemental water, and it is perfectly happy. It probably would grow larger in all its parts and be more aggressive in a wetter spot. Zone 5 - Joseph
Petasites japonicus variegatus is a very hardy plant to zone 3 with large round leaves. Each leaf grows from an underground rhizome. The leaves are larger usually 1 to 2 feet across and green with bright yellow markings. Plants bloom white flowers early spring. Preforms best in shade to partial shade with moist to boggy soil. It can handle more sun if soil remains wet. Very tropical prehistoric looking plant great for most northern to subtropical gardens.
Bloomscape appears in early spring, long before the leaves emerge. The flowers are a ball of delicate pink atop a tall, stiff green scape. When the leaves appear, they are green with a white border, heart shaped and quite tropical looking. Likes partial shade and though it will tolerate afternoon sun, it will wilt horribly and just make you feel guilty for putting it in that spot in the garden.

Japanese children use the huge 2-3' wide, flamboyantly variegated leaves as umbrellas!; their more practical parents grow it for its edible (; potentially invasive) rhizome; small "bridal bouquet" flower heads in early spring. Sun-PSh/Med-Wet
