Ohhhh, the Hepaticas, probably my favorite early Spring flowers, very early, very robust, yet at the same time very delicate. The first reminders of what is to come in the woods and meadows. Hepatica acutiloba is very easy to distinguish from its sister species Hepatica americana, by its three-lobed sharply pointed leaves. White to blue flowers with all shades in between last for weeks. Full shade to part sun, moist but well draining soil. 6-12" tall.
Liver leaf (Hepatica acutiloba) emerges in spring from amongst the over-wintered foliage with pure white, star-like flowers with yellow-green centres resembling Anemone nemorosa. The beautiful, silver-mottled foliage is uniquely shaped with three lobes together forming a heart. Long-lived and easy to grow in pots or the shade garden.
Sharp Leaved Hepatica is a woodland wildflower that packs plenty of punch for such a little guy. The bright blue to pink flowers (sometimes even white) are simply gorgeous, and serve as an important early spring flower for many different pollinators. The mottled foliage is typically evergreen, providing year round interest in the shade garden. Mix with later blooming woodland flowers and sedges for contrast and season long interest. Prefers well-drained near neutral to alkaline soils. Zones 3 - 7.
This Hepatica forms much stronger clumps than H. americana. The leaves have sharp three pointed lobes and the white, pale blue, or pink flowers are more numerous than those of americana. This prefers a more neutral to alkaline soil than H. americana, and here in Michigan it is a much rarer plant.
