If you have a tough spot in dryish shade where other things refuse to grow…this plant may be for you! Expanding clump 8-12” tall to 2-3’ wide on challenging sites – pretty cedar scented lobed leaves – deep magenta flowers with red sepals to 1” late spring to early summer and often repeating in fall – nice, eventual ground cover, non-invasive; deer and critter resistant.
The cultivars of G. macrorrhizum are hard to live without once you've been introduced! Fragrant leaves form a low mound that spreads into a dense ground cover with good autumn colour. The flowers are bright magenta-pink in late spring and early summer. The feature that will most endear this plant to you, however, is its tolerance of dry shade, even under evergreens. In these situations it will bloom less and grow shorter but will usually tough it out with minimal water once established.
The most intensely colored variety in this species, with deep magenta flowers and low spreading clumps of palmate, aromatic leaves. Use around trees or shrubs that provide partial shade.

Flowers are deep magenta with clashing red sepals, a fine old variety with aromatic foliage and flowers held well above the leaves, spectacular when planted en masse. It tolerates dry shade; the leaves are almost evergreen and have good fall color.
Big Root Geranium is how the botanical name transcribes, but don't let that stop you from trying this very handsome 8-10" spreader, so useful for difficult situations. Tolerates dry shady spots, blooming in May-June with rose-purple flowers above citrus scented foliage.
