Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Eucalyptus enthusiasts will be familiar with the popular E. gunnii and the handsome E. urnigera, but they may be unaware of this beautiful Tasmanian species closely related to both. Found only in a few locales near Hobart, Tasmania, it makes a vigorous tree of open habit to 60' or more, with smooth, attractive bark mostly in shades of white, cream and grey, and silvery-blue pendulous leaves. The juvenile leaves are exceptional, being smaller than that of E. gunnii and E. urnigera, with similar crenulate (ruffled) margins to E. urnigera. Like its relatives, it will also tolerate wet soils and drought, requiring only full sun to thrive. I have some reports that it thrives in climates with hot summers, and could possibly make a good substitute for E. gunnii in the South. Protect the base of the tree from frosts for the first couple winters. Hardy to about 10°F, possibly lower when the tree matures.
