Finally have a few of this pretty grape. Found by Roger Raiche in California. This is believed to be be V. 'Californica' x with a cultivated grape. V. californica has yellow fall color and this plant positively glows red.
Fast growing, deciduous vine climbing to 25' with support. Large leaves open apple green turning to mid-green through summer and finally a bright crimson in autumn.?Fall coloring is reliable?in even cool coastal climates. Effective, climbing up a tree or over a wall or fence. The summer flowers are yellow-green and fragrant, followed by small, insignificant clusters of purple grapes. Best in full sun to partial shade with rich, moisture-retentive soils. Moderate water. Hardy to 0°F.
This vigorous climbing vine grows 3-6 ft per year. It turns flaming red before losing it's leaves. Also sets fruit profusely, with occasional water. The grapes are sweet, but a bit seedy making them a favorite snack for many types of wildlife. Great used to cover fences, trellises, arbors, or as ground cover. The intense coloring will catch everyone's eyes. Prune annually to control growth rate. Cultivars such as this are horticultural selections and hybrids, not part of the native ecology but work beautifully in the garden. Select cultivar Selected by Roger Raiche, at the U.C. Botanic Garden
A drought tolerant, wall-covering, ground-covering grape! This form, selected by Roger Raiche, has small grapes in shades of purple-blushed-red, providing happiness for local birds - and you, too. Fall color is spectacular as well. Deciduous and vigorous but quite prunable in early spring or whenever it needs discipline. Sun to part shade in lean soil with occasional summer water. Reported frost hardy in USDA zone 6.
California native grape, deciduous. Gray and green leaves revamp to a deep, rich red in autumn months. Edible, small purple fruit. Fast growing and frost hardy.
A large deciduous climber known for its spectacular Autumn color, Roger Raiche discovered this individual near the Russian River standing apart from its neighbors because of its riotous red Fall color. In growth, the leaves are rounded and a dull gray green. Recently it was discovered that this selection (which is popular in countless native gardens) is actually a first generation hybrid between our native grape (Vitis californica) and a non-native wine grape (Vitis vinifera). So, though it is not a true, unadulterated native, it’s just as lovely and deserving of a place in the garden. The grapes it produces are seedy but edible & attract wildlife. They also can be used to make jelly! Grows to 30-40’ fairly quickly. Though Vitis californica is often found along the banks of streams, it can get by with very little water & long periods of drought once established.
